2 Nephi 2 introduces the topic of Agency. It starts in Vs.11 and states "For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insesibility."
vs. 13 " If there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not, there is not God. And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore all things must have vanished away."
So as I was reading this chapter and got to that verse it made me really start to think. The part that I highlighted is what hit me and made me start to think about what my life would be like and how I would feel if i wasn't apart of any religion. To me I can't even comprehend it, I can't imagine not knowing why we are here on earth or how we got here. There is no way that it "just happened." I mean just take a look around and see all the beauty that surrounds us. Think deep about our bodies and how they work. Our bodies are so amazing and the beauty that surrounds us is amazing! It couldn't have all just randomly happened. That verse states it so simply. There has to be a God. If there is no god, we simply would not be here. I'm so grateful to know why we are here. To know that not only is there life after death but we will be in a place so peaceful and pure that we can't even comprehend with our naive minds. I'm such an anxious person already that I know if I did not know what I know I would freak out everyday. I would have so much anxiety and scary feelings of why are we even here and why we have to endure what we have to endure. God simply created us and this beautiful world so we could become like him and return to him. He gave us agency so that we could come to know our true selves and figure out for ourselves the importance of coming to earth and gaining a body. We can be taught things our whole life but it really comes down to the point in your life when you really take the time and effort to figure it out for yourself. We often pitty ourselves when we are going through trials or hardships but really..... how would we know happiness if it wasn't for those times in our lives. I know that's not the first time you've heard that but it's something I feel that we should think about often and really appreciate those times in our lives that we have to make choices. Some choices may be the wrong ones that lead us to painful consequences BUT thank goodness we can learn from our mistakes and choose differently the next time. I can't imagine a world without Agency. We would know nothing, we would not be able to be individual people.
Early this morning in chapter one of 2 nephi, Lehi talks to Zoram and tells him because of the decision he made to go with Nephi (1st Nephi chapter 4) not only would he be blessed but his "seed" would be blessed as well. That just goes to show that our choices now effect not only us but generations after us. Every decision we make in life.....a little overwhelming to think about???? Definitely, but having that thought always in mind will help you make decisions you may be having a hard time figuring out. Agency is a beautiful thing because of it we get to experience true happiness.
Hope that all made sense. Kind of random but definitely made me think. Which is hard for me to do sometimes! :)
